Places to See
Each year, millions of people flock to the proclaimed Pearl of Arabia, where they find themselves in awe of the country’s host of various terrains, activities, and cultural locations. For instance, one of the most visited spots in Oman is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, a stunning and extravagant structure that can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. The grand and intricate design of the mosque with its blue mosaic tiles, sweeping archways, and incredible gardens make it the first stop in nearly every tour itinerary. Visitors also marvel at one of the mosque’s highlights – the second largest handmade Iranian rug in the world that took over 600 women four years to weave.
But the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is not the only must-visit in Muscat. Within the city lies the Mutrah Corniche, a peaceful area facing the sea with the country’s famous rocky mountains and forts dotting the background. The white buildings and mosques found here turn gold in the late afternoon light and many consider this the best spot for catching Oman’s world-renowned beautiful sunsets. The Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest markets in the country, also lies nearby where tourists can purchase pashminas, ceramic incense burners, silver jewelry, and more.
Outside Muscat are several other sites that those visiting Oman shouldn’t miss. The 17th century Jabrin Fort, sometimes referred to as Jabreen Castle, lies amid an oasis of date palms. Its vast network of restored and well-kept rooms, some of which feature medieval defense mechanisms like murder holes, are a treat to explore. If you’re looking to take a step back in time, then this sand castle in the desert is your best bet!
Those in the mood to explore more medieval defense structures should also head over to Nizwa Fort, another 17th-century building famous for its massive circular tower that visitors can climb for breathtaking views of the mosque, the rugged mountains on the horizon, and the towering date palms nestled within this oasis city. Here, locals are usually found wandering about, making crafts, and baking bread over open fires. If you’re in the mood to explore the rich history and culture of Oman, then Nizwa Fort shouldn’t be missed!
There are many other stunning sights and locations in Oman; the Jebel Akhdar, a mountain village surrounded by jagged peaks; the Misfat al Abryeen, a labyrinth of narrow and crumbling mud houses with lush banana and date plantations; the Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain with thrilling views deep down into the Wadi Ghul, also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia; and the Wahiba Sands with its rolling dunes and hair-raising recreational activities, among others.
